Simulation of stream flows and climate trend detections using WEAP model in awash river basin

The shrinking of water resources along with the frequent droughts plays an effective role in intensifying crisis. Climate change adversely affects hydrological cycle at basin level. These are often reflected and food insecurity, hydrologic extremes, drought, flooding, deteriorating ecosystem health. This study aims to calibrate validate stream flows Awash River using a distributed Water Evaluation And Planning (WEAP) model. Mean monthly Precipitation; temperature flow used run model was calibrated validated mean flow. trends climate over were also investigated Mann Kendall trend tests. results revealed that value R2 ranged from 0.73 0.91 during calibration periods. On other hand, Nash—Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) is 0.65 0.83. However, values coefficient determination (R2) validation periods 0.54 (NSE), ranges 0.50 0.84. Thus, two important parts main river (upstream downstream) gauges showed good agreement between simulated observed receives significant amount rainy season (June September). annual rainfall 100 1700 mm great spatiotemporal variation. shows sharp decreasing (Z = −0.120 period. findings this could provide insights for concerned bodies implement management techniques. proposed that, ensure sustainability resources, better long-term policies required be implemented meet future downstream needs.
